Azerbaijan land border

So we’re hoping that the land border between Azerbaijan and Georgia will re-open in July 01 2023. There has been much debate about whether this will actually happen this time around, as there have been many announcements and dates set in the past which haven’t been adhered to.

Worst comes to worst, should you just want to visit you can fly in to the country, however you cannot currently drive in. That being said, although the land border is closed officially, the opposition party was unhappy with the closure to 1 May, and was putting pressure on the current government, stating that in the first 2 months of 2023, 35.1% of foreigners arrived in Azerbaijan by rail and road transport.

The border was officially closed due to Covid19, however Azerbaijan has now lowered its border restrictions based on Covid19. So I’m hopeful that the border will re-open soon. Turkmenistan is also now open, which may also help to sway opinion? Fingers crossed.

There’s also continuing conversations surrounding the land border between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the area of Nagorno-Karabakh. Nagorno-Karabakh is a disputed territory, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. However, on May 22, Armenia stated that it’s ready to recognise the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave as part of Azerbaijan if Baku guarantees the security of its ethnic Armenian population – potentially making it easier to travel between the different areas.
