Austrian blog …
Our Austrian blog hopefully show just how much we love Austria! It is awesome!
Overlanding in Austria
Overlanding in Austria is an adventure like no other. Nestled in the heart of Europe, this stunning country offers some of the most picturesque landscapes and charming villages for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you’re driving a rugged 4×4, a camper van, or just a plain old car (like we do :)), Austria has the ideal blend of rugged nature, historic towns, and peaceful wilderness for a truly unforgettable journey.
The Austrian Alps: an overland wonderland
No overlanding trip in Austria is complete without exploring the Austrian Alps. Stretching across the the whole of the west of the country, the Alps dominate the landscape, offering stunning views, and endless opportunities for driving adventures.
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a must-visit. The 30 miles (48 km) route takes you to the base of Austria’s highest peak, Grossglockner, at 12,461 ft (3,798 m) above sea level.

Similarly the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße is a trip of a lifetime. At 14 miles (22 km) in length, it offers some absolutely outstanding views, including views of Piz Buin mountain.

Both roads are dotted with plenty of spots to pull over and enjoy the views, and both are a photographer’s dream, with dramatic peaks, glacial lakes, and alpine meadows.
Pretty villages
Not far from Salzburg is the beautiful are of Salzkammergut, which has loads of lovely villages to explore as well as outstanding lake-mountain combination views.

Just on the east of Salzkammergut is Hallstatt, often called one of the most beautiful villages in Europe. Hallstatt sits on the edge of a crystal-clear lake with the backdrop of towering mountains. A visit to this UNESCO World Heritage site feels like stepping into a fairytale, with its cobblestone streets, historic houses, and serene atmosphere. You can even take a boat tour across Lake Hallstatt, or hike up to the Skywalk for panoramic views of the town and the surrounding landscape.
Wild camping
Austria is an incredibly camper-friendly country, and there are loads of campsites scattered throughout the country, many of which offer breathtaking views. From simple wild camping, with fantastic mountain views in the Alps to well-equipped campsites near lakes, the options are almost endless. However, some states in Austria have strict camping rules, especially in protected natural areas, and in some states it’s illegal. Remember: leave no trace!

Local culture and traditions
One of the best things about overlanding in Austria is experiencing the country’s rich cultural heritage. When in Innsbruck, we were lucky enough to see some musicians playing traditional music. And when we were in Zell Am See, there was a parade of people all dressed in traditional costumes 🙂

As you travel through villages, don’t miss out on the opportunity to try local delicacies like Wiener Schnitzel, Sachertorte, or Apfelstrudel. Many small villages also host traditional festivals throughout the year, with music, dancing, and local craft markets.
Overlanding in winter
Before heading into Austria, check out the rules on driving in winter time. Cars and vehicles up to 3½ tonnes can only be driven in wintry conditions between 1 November and 15 April if winter tyres are fitted to all wheels, or if snow chains are fitted to at least two of the driven wheels.
Also be aware of potential road closures in winter due to heavy snowfall. Many roads have dynamic signage stating whether they’re open or not, and many close for the winter period
While Austria is well equipped for overlanders, make sure you always have extra fuel and supplies, especially if you’re venturing into more remote regions.
One of the ultimate overlanding experiences?
Overlanding in Austria offers a perfect mix of natural beauty, adventure, and rich culture. From the majestic Alps to charming villages and picturesque lakes, the country is a dream destination for anyone looking to explore the great outdoors. Whether you’re tackling rugged mountain roads or relaxing by a tranquil lake, Austria‘s diverse landscapes and friendly atmosphere make it one of Europe’s top overlanding destinations.
Whilst it’s not hard-core like parts of Africa, or some parts of Albania or Armenia, it really does provide some of the most breathtaking scenic views in Europe!
