What’s it like in Montenegro?

Wow, hopefully this Montenegro blog will highlight how much we love Montenegro! In this Montenegro blog we recall our overland trip through the country, taking a journey through Biogradska Gora, Piva Canyon, Durmitor and Budva.

Nestled along the Adriatic coast, Montenegro is one of Europe’s most incredible and mesmerising countries, offering anyone who loves overlanding a blend of rugged mountains, dense forests, and picturesque beaches. With its diverse landscapes, Montenegro is the perfect destination for anyone who craves mountains, the beach, adventure, natural beauty, and a deep dive into Balkan culture.

Piva Canyon: Montenegro’s hidden gem

We entered Montenegro from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and were almost immediately blown away by the incredible Piva Canyon! This stunning natural marvel is one of the most underrated and unknown destinations in Montenegro, and it’s a paradise! As you drive along the winding roads that hug the canyon’s cliffs, prepare for breathtaking views of the deep turquoise Piva River that cuts its way through towering rock walls, that look like they were all dug by hand!

Piva Canyon is a dream destination for anyone looking for a mix of stunning scenery and thrilling off-road trails. The narrow, serpentine roads never require a 4×4, but the drive is well worth it. Stop at scenic viewpoints to soak in the dramatic landscape, or venture to one of the many hiking paths along the canyon to experience it on foot.

For anyone seeking an extra adventure, the Piva Lake offers the opportunity for kayaking, fishing, or simply relaxing by its shores. If you’re up for it, a boat tour can take you around the lake to explore its hidden corners and enjoy the views of the canyon from a different perspective.

Durmitor: a magnificent mountain adventure

After exploring the amazing Piva Canyon, we headed to the majestic, incredible Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that boasts some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe. Located in the northern part of Montenegro, Durmitor is a paradise for anyone who loves to immerse themselves in the great outdoors. It is amazing!

Durmitor national park landscape is almost alien-like

Durmitor is famous for its towering peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and incredible, almost alien-like terrain. The main roads through the park are in great condition, although there are also several off-road tracks that mean navigating rugged terrain that should challenge experienced drivers. The park is also home to the world-renowned Tara River Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in Europe, as well as the pristine Black Lake, which reflects the surrounding mountains like a mirror.

There are endless opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and camping in Durmitor, so whether you want to conquer the highest peaks or simply relax by the lakeside, you’ll find it all here. The park also offers the chance to spot wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, and wild boars, adding to the thrill of the experience.

We absolutely loved Durmitor, definitely one of the best places in Europe that we’ve seen, just incredible! One of the best ways to explore Durmitor is by taking the scenic route through the Zabljak area, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the mountains and valleys, and take in the Bobotov Kuk, at 8,278 ft (2,523 m) above sea level. There are also some cozy guesthouses and campsites in the region, perfect for unwinding after a long day of exploration.

Biogradska Gora: the wild heart of Montenegro

Biogradska Gora, which we’d never heard of, is one of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests. It really surprised us just how lovely and relaxing the whole area is. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a natural wonder, where towering trees, diverse wildlife, and crystal-clear lakes create a surreal environment that feels as if it’s frozen in time. The park also has an eco-friendly vibe, with sustainable accommodation and facilities designed to minimize human impact.

The Biogradska Gora nature reserve is so serene

The forest is home to hundreds of species of plants and animals, including bears, wolves and rare birds. We really appreciated the tranquility and seclusion of the area, perfect for a night of camping under the stars. Driving into Biogradska Gora, you wind through narrow roads lined with ancient trees, leading you to Biogradsko Lake, a serene body of water surrounded by the thick forest. Hiking trails are abundant, offering sweeping views of the untouched wilderness. Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, or simply seeking solitude, Biogradska Gora provides a truly immersive overlanding experience.

Budva: the jewel of the Adriatic coast

After tackling the rugged mountains and pristine forests of Montenegro, we headed down to the coast for some well-earned relaxation. ON the way we passed some massive rockfalls, and some fallen rocks that were as alert as our VW Golf car! Eventually we arrived at Budva, located on the Adriatic coast, the country’s most famous coastal town, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and beautiful beaches.

Beautiful Budva

As you drive down from the mountains toward the coast, you’ll notice a change in the landscape, from dense forests to dramatic cliffs that drop into the turquoise waters of the sea. Budva is known for its charming Old Town, with its narrow cobblestone streets, medieval walls, and Venetian-style buildings. It was so relaxing to take a leisurely stroll through the Old Town, exploring the ancient churches and small boutiques.

Budva is also a hub for beach lovers, offering a wide variety of sandy beaches where you can swim, sunbathe, or try your hand at water sports like jet skiing and windsurfing. For a more secluded experience, drive along the coast to discover hidden coves and quieter beaches, ideal for camping and enjoying Montenegro’s natural beauty in peace.

The nightlife in Budva is also vibrant, with a plethora of bars, clubs, and restaurants offering fresh seafood and local delicacies. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a few days of adventure in Montenegro’s wild interior.
