Asia road trip – Let’s explore here!

This is a map of our proposed journey through Asia. Due to the uncertainty of conflict in a number of areas, our Asia road trip route will probably change.

The planned route will take us from GeorgiaRussiaKazakhstanUzbekistanTajikistanKyrgyzstanKazakhstanRussia. From Vladivostok we hope to travel to South Korea and Japan.

Azerbaijan border controls

The journey has been planned this way due to Azerbaijan closing its land borders to vehicles entering the country. There is the possibility of shipping a vehicle into Azerbaijan from Georgia, and then flying in, although costs may be prohibitive. Azerbaijan’s policy also prevents the crossing of the Caspian Sea by ferry to both Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

Overlanding in Turkmenistan and China

Gaining entry to both Turkmenistan and China is also difficult, due to visa restrictions. It is possible to enter and travel through both countries via an authorised tour operator, although again, costs may be prohibitive, especially in the case of China.

Is there a border between Kazakhstan and Mongolia?

There is no border between Kazakhstan and Mongolia, despite the short 23 miles (37 km) distance between the two vast countries. This means that transit through either Russia or China is required.

Heading east from Russia

Transiting a vehicle from Vladivostok in Russia to anywhere but North Korea or South Korea is very difficult, and impossible for citizens of many countries. Additionally, getting a vehicle from South Korea to Japan, Canada or USA may be cost prohibitive.
